With the contemporary notion of a great song no longer solely limited to its auditory value alone, David E Finck's "Gentle Journey" defies expectations as an instrumental composition starring an ensemble of masterful musicians, including Catherine Russell as the vocalist and tenor saxophonist Andy Snitzer; in doing so, it transcends sound with philosophical ideas brain teaser a song can trigger.
"Gentle Journey" speaks a lot about Jazz and music with storytelling. After hearing things from both ways it all makes sense. I also heard that Peter Martin liked there to be some kind of hook, but I think "Gentle Journey" does have a hook, it's just the way things are being played, not necessarily the words. I think we can all agree that this song is a jazz song, although I do think there are different variations of it like what John Ellis talked to us about how jazz doesn't necessarily have to be a song but can be improvisation too. What I first heard from the official definition of jazz makes sense, but I also can see where John Ellis is coming from.
What does everyone else think about it, Is it a jazz song or something else according to your definition of jazz? A music that tells a story that without words music can tell you a story. So what story, emotions, etc does this song tell you?
I love the song "Gentle Journey" because I think it's very soft and smooth the way they do it. To me, it doesn't really sound as old or traditional as we think jazz and soul to be, but it still has a little bit of that old school. I think he has a lot of vocalistic ideas from R&B that he probably picks up from singing. It was all very musical. I don't really see how you are throwing this song up on a line between jazz and soul is hard to do. After listening to it for almost the whole semester and learning how to define jazz and everything else, I would definitely categorize this song as jazz.
The complex team, around all that creates this group they can each be known for. You get one type of sax but the other isn't any good so for the music of this genre you need to surround yourself with other people who can play instruments to a very high standard, and all of the members shine at a high level of playing which is very apparent during the song with all of the talent playing; you can see that they are a talented group by how easily they switch from their own solo to back up to solo, etc...

The singer, Catherine Russell is sultry and expressive vocally which mixes her voice well with the way saxophone played by Andy Snitzer. Tony Kadleck on the trumpet and Mike Davis on the Trombone add an almost square layer of depth and professionalism as without their parts the song wouldn't be as powerful and as polished. Bernd Shoenhardt's resonator guitar complements the trombone solo very well and Clint de Gannon's drum kit and the fascinating way he plays the drum fit the song very well. Then you have all of the percussion which adds to the groove of the completely swaying song.
The piece, "Gentle Journey", truly embodies the idea of collaboration, the piece may have been produced by artists many miles apart, but they have almost seamlessly come together, the lyrics have directed each of the artists to navigate their verse in a soulful ballad which takes you on a journey of personal self-examination and encouragement.
David E Finck's ambitious "Gentle Journey" does more than paint pictures musically. "Journey" also pays homage to the emotion that the same piece of music can render within the spirit. Having its roots in classic soul and contemporary R&B, this composition is a testament to and a combination of all eras of black Arias.
In a time where the connection is almost as important as the sound, "Gentle Journey" shows the deep connection a song can make. It shows that soulful melodies and spot-on lyrics still hold the power of generations. David E Finck's journey is not gentle, it's epic, and it tugs at you till you can't help but be moved.
