In an age where most love songs lie about dealing with heartbreak, Star2, LerMuDex, and Thai rap legend TaeTae tell it exactly how it is in their latest single, "You're Still the Same." This harrowing collaboration plumbs the depths of the toxicity of bondage-as-love, and the sensations of a cycle of love that no longer heals but hurts.
Backed by a bittersweet contrast of downcast vocals, bright melodies, and an addictive beat, the track draws listeners into an emotional tug-of-war. The song is sung in part in the unique Ka-ren language, giving extra gravity to the story and making it personal as well as universal. The accompanying music video illustrates this battle, following a couple (played by Eh La and Eh Na) at the breaking point, where love has become a battleground with no end in sight. But then there is this moment of escape when Star2, LerMuDex, and TaeTae show up in a Sprinter van, offering one more ride and one more sign of freedom, friendship, and self-worth.
For Star2, a Thai refugee who is now an up-and-coming hip-hop star, this song means much more than music. His mission is to elevate Ka-ren voices and support artists from refugee camps to ensure the next generation can thrive. Star2 captures that spirit with his new EP, "No Place Like Home," coming May 9th, featuring wall-banging names like Sprite, Luh Kel, and LerMuDex.
