Una Lengua Infinita returns with a thought-provoking and deeply evocative new single, "Contra la seducción." They are making music that subtly argues for peace while continuing the critique of letters in Africa. On the latest release, the band explores the seductive power of wretched philosophies, inspired by the poetic lines of Berthold Brecht's poem Against Seduction and the contemplative sensibility of Wolfgang Borchert's short story My Pale Brother.
"Contra la seducción" has the band's hallmarks of anti-war, pro-humanity messaging, but this time, there's also a wash of stark minimalism over the music. The song's emotional heft is bare with a sparse, unadorned arrangement. There's no need for extra instrumentation to pull out the message's weight. The ghostly simplicity reflects the meditative quality of the material, and the treacherous allure of seductive ideologies that regularly lead, however indirectly, to war and its carnage.
Brecht's poem "Against Seduction," is a scathing critique of the seductive pull of ideologies that lead people, particularly the youth, to war. It's a timely warning about the ease with which destructive ideas can steer the course of eager minds, offering glory and purpose and delivering tragedy and futility.
A hand-drawn animated video (drawn by Borchert, who also inspired the short) accompanies the song's release and is based on Borchert's My Pale Brother. It tells the story of war in a way that delves into the deep wounds soldiers carry long after surviving the brutality of battle. The animation serves as a stark visual representation of this trauma, with the song's themes of loss, suffering, and the lasting consequences of violence. Jointly, music and video make for a stark, visceral experience that lingers in the listener after the song is through.
With "Contra la seducción," Una Lengua Infinita demonstrates how music doesn't need to be grand or lush, and the power of minimalism can be just as compelling, if not more so. The song's vibe puts you inside an environment of making peace and contemplating about other worldly concerns, where the anguish of battlefields and the ramifications of allurement doctrines are openly exposed. This creation is an art that demands to be listened to as music and as a trenchant critique of our world.
