Haley Joel Osment, former child star of "The Sixth Sense," which remains one of the most disturbing movies of all time, has, once again, made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The 37-year-old actor was arrested earlier this month at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in Mammoth Lakes, California, and charged with public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance.
Osment was arrested on April 8 after authorities responded to a call at the location around 2:00 p.m. local time, the Mono County Sheriff's Department said. People had reported seeing a man who appeared to be intoxicated at the slopes. When officers arrived at the scene, Osment was with the resort's ski patrol, the police said. He was reported to be acting disoriented and erratically, leading officers to look further, which resulted in his arrest.
Documents reviewed by the site confirmed Osment was booked "on charges of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance." Luckily for the actor, there was no extended period of imprisonment following the arrest. He was released soon after being booked, though the terms of his release have not been revealed.
The move is another addition to a long list of legal troubles for Osment, who has long faced difficulties shaking off the child-star image that defined his early years. In 2006, when he was only 18, Osment entered a no-contest plea to DUI and marijuana possession charges after crashing his car in LA. That episode resulted in a three-year probation sentence.

Now, almost two decades later, Osment's name is in headlines again, but not because of a career comeback or a Hollywood project. Instead, the actor's arrest at one of California's most sought-after ski locations has renewed discussions about the pressures of early success and the difficulty of leading a private life under public observation.
Though his actions may have cost him the role and perhaps other jobs in the future and maybe even the respect of the fans, some still hold out good hope that he will get the help he needs. Osment, who has lent his voice to several projects over the years, including several installments of the video game series Kingdom Hearts, as well as acting roles in "The Boys" and "Future Man," has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years, so this unexpected run-in with the law is all the more surprising.
Charges of public intoxication in California are typically misdemeanors, and unless combined with other offenses, they rarely result in meaningful jail time, legal analysts say. But charge possession of a controlled substance, and you could be facing much harsher punishment depending on what the substance was and the situation of the arrest.
The celebrity and tourist-friendly Mammoth Mountain resort is known for its scenic slopes and luxury. Such incidents are uncommon, but Osment's arrest shook up a peaceful ski setting. The continued fallout will be closely watched as the legal process plays out, and all eyes will be on how Osment decides to handle the situation.
