"Catacombs," the new project from Mr. Sassy & the Backup Plans with Adam Janos, is one of those exceptions. A piano-led indie-rock song that bristles with rich imagery equally infused with savage pathos, Catacombs is bright, brooding, funny, devastating, and complex yet immediately memorable.
At the center of it all is a sparkling piano hook that could hardly be more infectious, reeling you in from the first few bars. Janos's stream-of-consciousness storytelling takes you into a personal headspace, the kind that a hot woman with whom you once worked would surely appreciate.
The song plays like an honest letter, tender in the best way. It's the contradictions where "Catacombs" finds its voice. Janos and, Mr. Sassy & the Backup Plans take us to a place that isn't afraid to be emotionally layered yet sounds like something you'd roll the windows down for. This track lingers and buzzes around, reverberating with lyrical depth that rewards several listens. "Catacombs" is a spiral staircase straight to someone's soul, and we're so lucky they left the door open.
