Sandra-Mae Lux swings back to jazz roots with "Are We Having Fun"

Sandra-Mae Lux goes directly into the sophisticated, timeless magic of jazz. Her latest single, "Are We Having Fun," is a door swinging open, inviting you into a world of romance, mischief, and melody. It's the first preview of her upcoming album, "Seasons in Jazz," which arrives on May 30th, and if it's anything like this track, we know we're in for a treat.

This new era sees Lux returning to her first love, jazz, a distinct departure from the shimmering disco discovered in her 2020 debut, "Happily Ever Now." Echoing the golden era of songwriting from the 1920s to the '50s, she builds a sound that retains a sense of nostalgia while feeling vibrantly alive.

Co-written with longtime lyricist Alan Marriott, "Are We Having Fun" blossoms from the inside out. Marriott and Lux started with the lyrics, crafting the song around a narrative heart and a classic AABA structure, the kind that made so many greats before them

Her voice is light and playful but full of character, beautifully suited to the jazz trio of Rob Barron on piano, Calum Gourley on bass, and Sebastiaan de Krom on drums. Combined, they form a smoky lounge coziness with the right amount of swing to cause a foot tap and skip a heartbeat.

There's a joy in the song, a flirtation, a wink to the audience. It's about the excitement of fresh romance, the allure of secrecy, and the glitter of the spur of the moment.
